get to know us

We are dedicated to preserving and expanding the rich legacy of Black history, striving to uplift communities by providing the intellectual means to mobilize our neighbors through educational programs, historical projects, and community-driven events. Our work is rooted in the belief that honoring and understanding our past most informs our present.

Founded through the collaborative efforts of John Lewis's U.S. Department of State Gandhi King Scholarly Initiative and staff at the University of Alabama’s Education Department.

Our mission is to create a most transparent environment grounded in liberation, opportunity, and community.

Run and maintained by the people of the community we serve.

A Big Thank You to Our Supporters

We want to take a moment to express our heartfelt thanks to everyone who has already contributed to our mission. Whether you’ve donated your time, resources, or expertise, your support is making a tangible impact. You are the heart of this movement, and we couldn’t do it without you.

Get Involved—Together, We Can Make a Difference

But the work doesn’t stop here. There’s always more to be done, and we invite you to be a part of the change. Whether you’re volunteering, supporting Black-owned businesses, or sharing important resources and information, every step counts. Your involvement—big or small—helps create lasting change.

We believe that when we work together, we can build a stronger, most equitable future. So, thank you to everyone who has already helped—and to those ready to join the journey, we’re excited to have you with us. Let’s continue making a difference together.

What we do

a space primarily to foster conversations about the Black experience and the nuances within it.

Our space

A cultural hub

Infested with Black art and photos of the families that make Hobson City– this is also a space of heritage and culture.

Come join us

"In a racist society, it is not enough to be non-racist, we must be anti-racist."

Anglea Davis

Residents of Hobson City, Anniston, Oxford, greater Alabama, and all around the world are all encouraged and welcomed here. You don’t have to be a part of the community organization to participate in org events.
